As of early Wednesday morning, the most recent edition of the QS World University Rankings 2025 was made public.
The University of Delhi has risen the highest, reaching 79 spots from 407 in the previous year to 328 in 2024. From ninth place last year to seventh place this time, this central university in India has improved.
Employability is another area where Delhi University succeeds. Its graduates are highly employable with a strong score of 96.0 and a global rank of 44.
“The main driver of improvement is a focus on research and proper grant utilization.”
According to Yogesh Singh, vice-chancellor of the University of Delhi (DU), its focus on raising the standard of research is the cause of the university’s increase in ranking.
This accomplishment delights and honors us. Because of our stronger focus on research, we have been rising in the last two years and have improved our rating over the previous few years.

The Indian government has designated Delhi University (DU) as a public Institution of Eminence, resulting in funding for research, infrastructure improvements, inventions, and post-doctoral fellowships. Thus, this improved the system as a whole, Singh said.
Singh continued by saying that the institute has added an important amount of faculty members, which could help in raising the ranking even higher. “The ranking system clearly shows the university’s strong overall performance,” he continued.
Singh stated, “I believe Delhi University is heading in the right direction.” Our team of 400–500 people is working day and night for improvement of not only the standard of education but also giving focus to research, innovation, and new experiments.”
Singh was speaking about the future of the central university. I do not doubt that we will continue to rise in the rankings the next year,” he continued.
Why IITs set the standard
IITs consistently hold the top spots in both national and international rankings. IIT Bombay, Delhi, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Madras, and Guwahati hold seven of the top ten Indian rankings in the QS World University Rankings 2025.
Delhi University has made a name for itself in this IIT domination, yet it is still not ranked among India’s top 5 universities.
The explanation is that DU and IITs serve diverse student populations. “We have to understand Delhi University’s character. We educate the general public. Moreover, DU has a unique culture.
IITs focus on science and engineering despite offering all forms of education, including science, medicine, technology, social work, law, arts, humanities, and social science. This is according to Yogesh Singh.
“Every year, we graduate more than two or three lakh kids. Furthermore, rankings are not the only factor contributing to this rise; consider Delhi University’s role in India’s development,” he said.
The QS World University Rankings 2025
IIT Bombay has continued to hold the top rank in the India list, just like it did last year. The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, or IIT-B, rose 31 spots.
It went from 149 in the 2024 ranking to 118 in the QS 2025 Ranking. This year, it is followed by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and IIT Delhi, which came in second and third place in India, respectively.
The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-KGP), which rose from 271 to 222 in the 2024 rankings, has secured the fourth position.
IIT Madras rose 58 spots, moving from 285 to 227 this year, now ranks just behind IIT KGP. This time, IIT Madras has surpassed IIT Kanpur, which fell to sixth place this year after rising from 278 to 263 last year.
IIT Kanpur ranks fifth, followed by Delhi University in sixth place. The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITR), Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG), and Anna University are ranked eighth, ninth, and tenth, respectively.
