Freestyle Chess: Magnus Carlsen Takes on D Gukesh in Epic Clash

April has been set aside for the second part of the Paris Freestyle Chess competition. Magnus Carlsen will face world champion D Gukesh and Hans Niemann in an exciting matchup.
The Magnus Carlsen-led Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025 organisers have confirmed that the second leg will take place in Paris. In February, a local boy, Vincent Keymer, won the first leg, which was held in Weissenhaus, Germany.
In addition to Carlsen and Niemann, the other competitors include world champion D Gukesh, Indian Grandmasters Arjun Erigaisi, R Praggnanandhaa, Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, Keymer, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Alireza Firouzja, and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.

Before the tournament starts, an open online qualification tournament on Chess.com will be held to select the 12th player. The prize fund for the open qualification event will be $50,000.
The qualification tournament’s specifics are as follows:
March 8-9: Chess.com open qualifiers
12 March: Swiss-system competition for titled players on March 12
March 13-14: Swiss top four join 12 invited Freestyle Chess Players Club members in the knockout stage to vie for the final Paris seat.
The Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025 Paris leg will have a $750,000 prize pool, with $200,000 going to the champion.

During the tournament’s two-day round-robin phase, players will compete in a series of matches. The top eight will then advance to the knockout phase.
Classical time-control bouts will set the stage for a fierce battle over the next six days, culminating in an exciting climax.
