His declaration came just after India won its second T20 World Cup, a feat that filled the country with delight and pride.
Rohit Sharma retirement brings an end to an extraordinary T20I career in which he became the format’s leading scorer, scoring 4231 runs in 159 appearances.
He also holds the record for the most T20 international centuries, having scored five. His T20I career began with the first T20 World Cup in 2007, where he played a significant role in India’s first title victory.
Now, as captain, he has guided India to their second triumph, establishing his legend.
The final match versus South Africa was a nail-biter, with India securing a 176-run target. They, who needed 30 runs from the last 30 deliveries, thought to have the advantage.
However, India’s bowlers, headed by Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Arshdeep Singh, remained composed at vital moments.
Hardik Pandya, in particular, sparkled in the last over, brilliantly defending 16 runs to secure India’s thrilling seven-run victory.
This success was especially meaningful for Rohit Sharma, who had seen both highs and lows in his cricket career. The victory reflected his leadership, resilience, and relentless commitment.
Rohit Sharma reflected on his adventure, saying, “I’ve cherished every second of it. I began my Indian career in this style. This is what I wanted: to win the T20 World Cup.
Rohit Sharma Retirement follows that of his long-time colleague, Virat Kohli, who announced his retirement from T20 internationals following the T20 World Cup.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been the base of Indian cricket, with their contributions crucial to several wins over the years.
