DeVonta Smith on What He Likes About Kellen Moore Offense

DeVonta Smith shares his insights on what he admires about Kellen Moore offense, highlighting its strengths and unique strategies.

During the few sessions held this spring, it has been evident that the offense of the Eagles will be altered in 2024.

According to DeVonta Smith, that’s nice.

During Tuesday’s required minicamp, Smith declared, “I think it’s going to be great.” Introduce a fresh offensive approach.

Allowing men to do things like moving men about and other things that we weren’t permitted to do would be preferable to giving them more freedom. Generally, starting over is always beneficial.

The Eagles have to make some adjustments, even if it’s not like they’re completely discarding the productive elements of their offense from the previous several seasons. Head coach Nick Sirianni even acknowledged that his offense had grown boring after the 2023 campaign.

Based on Kellen Moore prior performance and a few spring practices, we may anticipate a few changes this season, including a rise in the use of pre-snap motion and a decrease in offensive predictability through a greater frequency of bunch, trips, and even empty formations.

Smith commented, “I’d say it just provides more space at times.” He elaborated, “Players don’t exert as much pressure when they’re in clusters and similar situations.” Additionally, it somewhat bewilders the defenders, giving you additional room and opportunity to move.

ESPN Stats and Info notes that in 2023, the Eagles had the lowest usage rate—only 10.9%. Last season, Kellen Moore offense with the Chargers was ranked seventh at 25.9%. These figures, together with three spring sessions, indicate that the Eagles won’t finish last in 2024.

As a first-round selection, Smith, 25, has played well in the NFL for three seasons and this offseason got a lucrative contract deal.

However, it appears plausible that the Eagles haven’t fully utilized Smith’s ability even after back-to-back seasons with 1,000 yards. It all boils down to usage in the end.

Smith was one of the players that many believed would gain the most from the shift when the Eagles brought in Kellen Moore. For example, Smith has only played 36 snaps in the backfield overall and 19.2% of his NFL snaps in the slot.

Kellen Moore has had some success getting the position to produce. So maybe this year, we’ll see Smith and possibly A.J. Brown in new places more frequently.

Smith mentioned, “Everyone has consistently played various positions and such.” He continued, “Yet, rearranging players enables them to engage in one-on-one encounters and win in their preferred manner.”

In recent years, the Eagles have employed several different play-callers to direct Sirianni’s offense. However, this offseason, a plan change is taking place in South Philadelphia. The Eagles have discussed integrating different languages and methods to develop a fresh offensive style.

Sirianni is also reluctant to provide too many specifics, as one might anticipate.

As he stated on Tuesday, “Yeah, again, you’ll see some of those things out there.” “You folks have seen a few things without delving too far into the specifics.

“I believe the common ground we share with Green Bay heading into the first game is our mutual status as unknowns. Do you agree? Many aspects remain unknown, which neither they nor we are likely to reveal during preseason play.”

Therefore, once again, those folks have done a great job, whether it’s a different kind of item with some possibilities there or an alternate way. There are several things.

The largest adjustment, according to Smith, is simply getting used to the new language. Smith is back at the NovaCare Complex this week after missing the two open OTA sessions, and he’s gaining some crucial on-field experience alongside quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Learning the new language is going to be Smith’s largest adjustment with the new offensive.

How does he approach it?

Basically just blending with the old material till the new information simply becomes ingrained in him, he remarked.

Though it’s only getting started, so far, so fantastic.
