Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Resigns and left the country on Monday, according to numerous sources, as more people died in some of the worst violence seen in the South Asian nation since its inception more than five decades ago.

General Waker-Us-Zaman, the army head, announced in a televised address that Hasina, 76, had left the country and that a temporary government would form.

According to media sources, she flew on a military chopper with her sister en route to the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, just across the border. According to another account, she was going to Tripura, in northeastern India.

Television footage showed thousands of people celebrating and chanting slogans in the streets of Dhaka.

Television footage showed crowds in the residence’s drawing rooms, with some carrying televisions, chairs, and tables from one of the country’s most secure buildings.

“She has fled the country,” several shouted.

Protesters in Dhaka also climbed onto a giant statue of Hasina’s father, independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. According to the video footage, they began shaping away at the head with an axe.

Student activists planned a march to the capital, Dhaka, on Monday, defying a statewide curfew, to pressure Hasina to quit, a day after almost 100 people were murdered in disputes throughout the country. Last month’s demonstrations killed around 150 people.

At least six persons were murdered in battles between police and protesters in Jatrabari and Dhaka Medical College on Monday, according to the Daily Star newspaper. We (Latest News in USA) could not immediately confirm the allegation.

Bangladesh has been rocked by protests and violence since last month when student organizations sought to remove a contentious quota system in government positions.

That sparked a drive to depose Hasina, who won a fourth consecutive term in January in an election boycotted by the opposition.
