The Malta police identified him as a former Irish soldier.

The lady, Nicolette Ghirxi (48), attacked to death in an apartment in Birkirkara, some 7 kilometres west of Valletta. Police claimed they shot dead Mr Johnston, her ex-partner, who accused of her murder.

According to initial reports, the woman died at her apartment at Triq Maestro Giuseppe Busuttil in the Birkirkara district of Swatar. Her dead body discovered at 2 a.m. on Monday.

According to sources close to the inquiry, the suspect went to the Hilton around midnight and requested a drink, but when told the bar closed, he pulled out a revolver.

Police summoned after allegations that a guy carrying a gun claimed to have murdered someone.

A police negotiator was called in, and two police teams were dispatched. One team went to Birkirkara, where they discovered the woman’s flat door was locked and needed to get in to find the victim had been killed.

Forensic specialists were on the site this morning, and the road was stopped. Neighbours who talked with the Times of Malta stated they heard nothing unusual overnight.

Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa described the events that led to the murder of Nicolette Ghirxi and the standoff with Mr Johnston.

He mentioned that three hours of conversations took place between the police and the person in question. The individual was in the sea with a pistol pointed at his head in St Julian’s.

He said that the man, who was Irish and in his fifties, entered the hotel in St Julian’s, intimidated workers, and then confessed that he had murdered someone minutes earlier. Police investigated and confirmed Ms Ghirxi’s death.

Police forced to take down the door and discovered her lifeless, with a knife beside her.

During the discussions, the guy urged to return to land, which he ultimately did, but around 3 a.m., he pointed the firearm at the police, according to the Malta Daily.

Despite being told to lay down his weapon, the guy charged at one of the cops, ending in his death. He taken to Mater Dei Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after, according to the news agency.

According to the website, the police commissioner said during the press conference that Ms Ghirxi filed a report after the two stopped their relationship in April.

However, she argued that she was not at risk; thus, no risk assessment was conducted.

The aggressor had returned to Ireland, but Ms Ghirxi informed police last week that he may be in Malta.

Ns Ghirxi reported in July that the attacker had posted about her on social media, but she continued to decline risk assessments.
