The amount of disruptions caused by Hurricane Beryl is more than double the 900,000-plus who lost power in May when a hurricane suddenly struck the area.
The company stated that it would need to carry out a damage assessment before releasing a public schedule for power restoration.
City of Houston Power Outage Update
More than 2.2 million people in the Houston area were without power Monday afternoon, as Hurricane Beryl passed directly overhead.
This is more than double the 900,000 people who lost power in May due to an unexpected derecho. It took almost a week to repair such outages.
As of 2:30 p.m. Monday, CenterPoint Energy has recorded over 6,300 distinct outages across its coverage area.
“The storm diverted off the originally predicted path and more heavily impacted the company’s customers, systems, and infrastructure than previously anticipated,” CenterPoint stated in a statement Monday afternoon.
The company stated that it would need to perform a damage assessment before releasing a public schedule for power restoration. Customers in the most affected areas may expect to be without power for a lengthy amount of time.
“We realize how tough it is to be without electricity out Houston for any period, particularly in the heat.i87 Lynnae Wilson, Senior Vice President of CenterPoint’s Electric Business, stated, “We are laser-focused on the crucial and time-sensitive work that lies ahead.”
The number of customers without power increased gradually throughout the morning as gusts reaching over 80 mph battered the region. By 6 a.m., around 500,000 people had lost power, and by 7 a.m., the figure had risen to one million.

Customers who want more precise information on City of Houston power outage and reconnection will have to do without the company’s outage map. It was taken offline following the storm and remained thus until Beryl struck.
CenterPoint plans to deploy “an extra 10,000 resources from other utilities” to aid in electricity restoration, along with setting up twelve staging sites across the region.
CenterPoint advises consumers to avoid downed powerlines and instead call a hotline at 713-207-2222.
According to CenterPoint, customers who are without power do not need to report their outage.
Beryl made an impact early Monday morning as a Category One hurricane near Matagorda. The hurricane has killed two people, according to reports.
